5D Business Conference

A sustainable acceleration

The 'old normal' assumed that companies existed solely for profit and commercial success had to come with human or environmental victims. But now these cynical beliefs are being replaced by a new understanding of the importance of collaboration and sustainability.

The intensification of ignorance

According to the hype of the past few years, the information revolution means we are better informed than ever before. But the reality is that computerisation based on bogus assumptions has led to an intensification and acceleration of ignorance.

Ebenezer Scrooge and the zero sum myth

Could it be that in Ebenezer Scrooge one can identify the genesis of the MBA? After all, both share an obsession with accountancy and the belief that employee welfare matters only to the employee and is a net cost to the business.

No way to earn a living

The second extract from Phil Whiteley's book, Meet the New Boss, published exclusively on Management Issues, records how the working experience played a formative role in rock and pop music - and the lyrical legacy this leaves.

Does work suck?

"Work is like sex" opens up chapter one of Philip Whiteley's new book, Meet The New Boss, a look at the influence of literature, music and comedy on how we view work. So how is work like sex? Read on to find out.

Death by accountancy

As the recession bites, thousands of companies will go to the wall unnecessarily, killed by the absurd, MBA-inspired pretence that a company consists of little more than costs and resources - that people and skills represent the 'soft stuff'.

Authenticity: will we fake it?

If 'authentic leadership' really is the latest management fad, it would be the cruellest irony of all.

Employee welfare and the economic cycle

The immediate outlook for job-seekers may not be the only casualty following the recent, somewhat surprising nudge upwards in the unemployment figures in the UK. It could also be that the priorities for motivation and the 'employer brand' take a knock.

RIP OFR. Does it matter?

There was much wailing, and much rejoicing, as Gordon Brown announced he is to ditch the requirement for listed companies to include Operating & Financial Reviews in their company accounts. Information that lobby groups regard as essential social and environmental information is condemned as unnecessary red tape by employers' groups.

New Revenue web problems set to hit Britain's employers

Britain's employers could face delays and extra costs with submitting crucial end-of-year tax forms, as a leaked Inland Revenue memo indicated that its web systems may not be ready in time.
