UK unemployment at 20 year low

Unemployment in the UK has hit its lowest total for 20 years, according to official figures from the Office for National Statistics, with more people now in work than at any time since 1984.

In the three months to February, the number of people out of work fell by 33,000 to 1.43 million while the number of those claiming unemployment benefit in March fell by 4,200 to 882,200.

But despite the fall, the UK's unemployment rate remained unemployment rate remained static at 4.8 per cent.

Average earnings increased by 4.9 per cent in the year to February, up by 0.2 per cent on the previous month. The rise is the fastest since August 2001.
