Shell to offshore IT jobs

Troubled oil giant Royal Dutch Shell is cutting 2,800 IT jobs in Britain, the Netherlands and the US over the next three years and moving many to India and Malaysia.

The firm has denied that the move is related to the unravelling scandal about the deliberate over-estimation of its proven oil reserves.

IT services at Shell have been renamed Group IT Infrastructure (GITI), apparently known internally as "Give IT to India".

The firm already has 1,000 people in a technology support centre in Malaysia and has reportedly signed agreements with two vendors in India, IBM and Wipro.

The plans are expected to save Shell some $850m per year.
