Offshoring - a good thing for everybody?

5D Business Conference

The idea that offshoring jobs is a good thing is something akin to heresy. Nevertheless, the Evening Standard’s Anthony Hilton makes just such a case in his column today.

"How it works is that from the perspective of the whole economy, the increased income in India means they have more money to spend, some of which goes on buying imports. Meanwhile, the company that exported the jobs passes some of the gain on to the public through lower prices and higher profits and dividends. Third - and this is the difficult one - the displaced workers are eventually re-employed into more productive and higher valueadded work. The logic of this is that we should be straining our sinews to export jobs, not keep them.”

But, as he also points out, this neat theory breaks down if the displaced workers in this country are not productively re-employed.
