Email fuels stress

Almost seven out of ten managers in Australia find having to deal with their daily avalanche of email is mildly or moderately stressful, according to research released by the Australian Psychological Society.

Eighty per cent of those surveyed spent more than a fifth of their day (at least an hour and a half) dealing with e-mails.

The results echo findings released in June 2003 suggesting that the average American employee spends about a quarter of their working day (around one and three quarter hours) dealing with email. Three out of ten spend more than two hours and almost one in ten (8 per cent) spend an astonishing four hours or more a day pouring over their inboxes.
